Anyone who participates in sports or physical activity is going to suffer from a sports related injury at some point. These injuries become much more common as one ages. Age causes a lot of problems with physical activity. The heart can no longer get as many beats as it did when it was young. Your lungs no longer have the same capacity. Your muscles are no longer as strong as they once were and you can injure them more.
- Cardiac output and heart rate change as we age, even for athletes, because the heart’s reaction to exercise changes as we age.
- Lung function, cognition and muscle mass are all affected as we age.
- Because of these bodily changes an athletes speed, coordination, reaction time and proneness to injury are all affected.
“Though it seems these days that more and more older people are keeping themselves in great shape and pushing the edge of the athletic envelope further and further, the aging process does bring an inevitable decline in physical capability, even for the Al Hannas of the world.”
